The challenge

The building needed new exhausts for its standby generators, run from the plantroom up to roof level.

Phase 1 took two generator outlets into one stack. Phase 2 added a 900 kW set, with exhaust gas up to 1,000°C.

At the top the stack had to be held in place on a finished roof, among the louvred plant screens.

What we did

Phase 1: two Ø200 primaries off the generator outlets into a Ø400 header, then a 12 m stack, all twin wall insulated.

Phase 2: a Ø300 and Ø375 twin wall insulated system from a Ø250 outlet, rated for 1,000°C at 5,000 Pa, with offsets to suit the route.

At roof level the offset is held in a galvanised channel frame standing on rubber feet in the gravel.

Supports at high level clamp each stack to the plant steel.

The result

Site photos date phase 1 to June 2020 and phase 2 to March 2021.

The roof frame sits on the gravel without cutting the roof finish.

Finishing details

The details we leave behind.

  • Rubber foot under a channel upright

    Frame on rubber feet

The roof frame stands on rubber feet in the gravel, so the roof finish is not cut.

  • Stack clamped to plant steel

    Clamped to the plant steel

Each stack is clamped to the existing plant steel at high level.
